Family Conflict

When we find ourselves in conflict with family, internal tension may arise. We may grapple with numerous conflicting thoughts and experience a level of self-doubt that can trigger feelings of guilt, shame, frustration, hopelessness, and confusion. This emotional turmoil can lead to anxiety, depression, and heartbreak, especially as we feel distanced from those who are supposed to be closest to us.

The reality of seeking counselling for family conflicts highlights two things. First, it underscores the significance of family. Second, it affirms the individual's own importance. We believe it is possible for individuals to fully be themselves and coexist within a family unit under non-abusive situations, though it demands effort from all involved. These efforts do not need to occur simultaneously, but concurrent action can be beneficial.

Drawing from family systems theory, we maintain that change initiated by a single individual can influence the entire system, like a cog in a wheel. This perspective suggests that one person can hold significant potential to effect change.

Our approach to resolving family conflicts focuses on establishing an environment where clients can recognize the coexistence of seemingly opposite truths, such as acknowledging the extensive efforts their family made to raise them while also recognizing that this same love is the source of their pain.

We assist clients in abusive and non-abusive households to systematically address values, needs, and expectations from differing viewpoints, and master the use of boundaries to foster safety and connection. This strategy has proven effective in calming turbulent internal dialogues, easing tension, and boosting self-efficacy, empowering clients to maneuver through the intricate terrains of cultural, familial, and societal expectations without losing themselves or others.
